This Week In Toronto (July 17- 23)

Ah, there you are.  So, did anyone catch one of the 3-D features from last week?  hmm?  anyone?  Well, I didn't.  Funny story, I had planned to see Dial M for Murder, but we went the wrong night.  the movie playing was 3 Dimensions of Greta.  When we asked what it was about, the concession guy said "um... Softcore...".  So, we went for a walk on the beach instead.  (don't get me wrong, I have no problem with softcore... just, you know, mixed company).
I've been pimping two Toronto acts the last couple of weeks (Ryan Driver and Eric Cheneaux), and they're playing in the city again this week, Friday and Wednesday, respectively (more info below).
And have you heard this yet?  it's called One Day as A Lion, and it features Zach De La Rocha and Mars Volta drummer John Theadore.  Pretty cool.
If you promise to click the links for more info, or post anything I missed in the comments section, I'll tell ya all about this week....

THURS JULY 17

It came From Outer Space playing at the Fox Theatre 7pm
So, this is the last night of the 3-D series at the Fox.  And it's a great sci-fi film from the 50's, a must see, go see, in 3-D!!

FRI JULY 18

Ryan Driver at St. George the Martyr Courtyard (197 John) 7:30
Driver is actually opening this show for Castlemusic.  I'm not entirely familiar with Castlemusic, but this is her CD release party.  I'm curious about the venue, I've never seen a show there, could be good.

SAT JULY 19

Elizabeth Shepperd, Jay Clark and the Jones, The Weirdies and more at the Sorauren Park Festival (Sorauren and Wabash) Noon to Midnight, FREE!!
A really good line-up playing at the Sorauren Park Festival this Saturday.  If you're in the west in, check it out, I'm not sure of the order, but it looks like good music all day.

Labyrinth playing at the Bloor Cinema 2pm
Wanna take a trip down memory lane?  An early show of Labyrinth is playing at the bloor.  David Bowie in all his package-bulgin' glory!  And a young Jennifer Connelly.  Good times.

SUN JULY 20

A Tribe Called Quest, NAS, Mos Def, De La Soul, Rakim, Method Man and Redman at Arrow Hall (6900 Airport Rd, Mississauga) $75- 175
Hefty price, but check out that line-up!  You won't get a more serious hip-hop show this year (or next for that matter).  A Tribe Called Quest!  Nas!  Mos Def!  De La Soul!  Rakim! I mean, sweet jesus! That is THE line-up of the year!

Vampire WeekendCat Power, Animal Collective, Chromeo, Tokyo Police Club at Rogers Picnic, Historic Fort York (100 Garrison) 2pm $49.50
Good weekend for Day long events.  Although this doesn't even compare with the Arrow Hall hip-hop show.  It's 100 times better then the always disappointing Warp Tour though.

TUES JULY 22

Peter Sellers Double Feature!! playing at the Fox theatre 7 and
9pm
Awesome!  Peter Sellers was a true genius, and I don't mean just in comedy.  The man was one of the most gifted actors in the business.  You can see two of his most famous films Dr Strangelove, and The Party.  Dr. Stranglove, has been playing around the rep circuit for a bit now, but to see a print of the Party sounds fantastic!  If you haven't seen it, Peter Sellers plays a middle eastern man (a little culturally insensitive, but not as much as it sounds), who, by accident, gets invited to a swingin' 60's party.  That's all you need to  know.  Hilarity ensues.

Annie Hall playing at Dundas Sq 9pm FREE!!
Dundas Sq, is in the middle of their romantic movie series, with, in my opinion, the best film of the set.  You can see Woody Allen's Masterpiece for Free!!  So, if you're not sure if you like Woody Allen's films, this may be the screening for you.

WED JULY 23

Eric Cheneaux at the Rivoli
I've been hyping Cheneaux (and Ryan Driver) for the last few weeks.  It's because he's great.  He's a unique voice in Canadian song writing, and his new album is one that gets under your skin, revealing something new with every listen.  A must see.

She and Him at the Opera House $23.50
I really want to like this album more.  She and Him is M. Ward and Zoey Deschanel (wearing her Loretta Lynn influence on her sleeve).  Anyone who saw Elf knows that she has a sultry, unique voice, but on the album is sounds like Ward just doesn't push her to get the best takes.  But, maybe it translates better live, who knows?  It's still better than a lot of the crap out there.

That's all folks.  See ya on the flip side.

wooo, third time's the charm! I made it out to 3D Metalstorm last night. Hell's yes.
It had a completely incoherent plot, awkward lines, and metal claw arms squirting ooze at you!

ps. your intro story is lacking .. it's too ambiguous, it doesn't really grasp the zeitgeist of Tuesday night. But good effort.

you don't know what Zeitgeist means!! I was trying to be subtle. Keep names out of the story. A lot of good peoples lives could have been ruined. I can't tell you how mad I am that you went to a 3-D movie without me. Grr... Grasp THAT zeitgeist!

excuse me sir, but do you have the time? .. you know .. the TIME??

ps. haha, I bet you had to look up the word zeitgeist. Improve your word power, Shawn. Be more like me.
