This week in Toronto (July 10- 16)

Ahoy. Soooooooo new week. that means... thisweekintorontojuly10to16th! I see the Bloor Cinema is kicking some cinematic ass again this week, and Fox is doing a week of 3-D films!! Anywho, you know the drill, click the links for info, and if I missed something wickedawesome this week, mention it in the comments section.  Love what you're wearing today.

THURS JULY 10

Ryan Oliver Quartet at Trane (964 Bathurst)
You kids like the jazz? Trane is always a great place to see it, and Thursday is no exception. Ryan is a fellow humber alumni, except, you know, he's making a serious career out of it. He's living in Manhattan these days, so chances of seeing him around these parts are slim, check it out.

Micky Dolenz and the Spoons at Capital Event Theater (2492 Yonge) $50
A Monkey and the Spoons? Sounds pretty interesting... I don't know if it sounds $50 interesting, but I'm pretty cheap, ya know?... oh it turns out they're not playing together... that would have been cool! I'm sure I wouldn't pay $50 for this, but who knows? maybe you will, it's for a good cause at least... I think.

12 Monkeys, Harold and Maude, and Dr. Strangelove at Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor W) 4:15, 7 and 9pm.
Bloor cinema had some killer films all week last week, and this week is more of the same. I mentioned 12 Monkeys and Dr. Strangelove last week (Great films FYI), but this week they've also got Harold and Maude playing. This is one of the weirdest, sweetest love stories ever made. If you like Wes Anderson films, you'll love Harold and Maude.

FRI JULY 11

Olenka and the Autumn Lovers at Mitzi's Sister (1554 Queen St)
Again, Olenka is back this week with her large crew The Autumn Lovers (featuring... me). We're playing with a band called Antler, who sound pretty good on their myspace. Come have a beer with me.

Harold and Maude and the Wizard of Oz playing at Bloor Cinema 4:30 and 9:30pm
Wizard of Oz will be played with Pink Floyd's Darkside of the Moon. So, I don't know, drop some acid.

Jaws and Friday the 13th playing at Fox Theatre (2236 Queen) 7 and 9:15pm
Part of Fox Theatre's 3-D Fest!! All week the fox is playing 3-D prints!! Jaws in 3-D should rock, but Friday the 13th in 3-D should Fucking rock.

Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition at Nathan Philips Square FREE!!
All weekend long, you can see (and possibly purchase) great art at Nathan Philips Square.  I've been every year for the past 4 years, and it's always impressive.  Support up and coming artists! Again, that's all weekend, 10 to 8 friday, 10-7 Saturday, 10-6 Sunday.  Rain or Shine.

SAT JULY 12

Johnny Cash tribute at Free Times Cafe
I'm usually up on the Free Times tribute nights, but this one escaped me until now. Johnny Cash tribute? fuckin' eh. Featuring Alistair Christl, Cleo Brown, Quincy LePalm, and Matt Behan. Worth it for Christl alone.

Before the Flood at Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen St.)
The ladies at Quarry Records have been trying to get me out to a Before the Flood show for awhile now, but it just hasn't worked out yet, and I'm not sure if this'll be the day either.  But, maybe one of you could go in place? No?   If you want free admission just confirm on the Facebook Page.

E.T. and Dr No playing at Bloor Cinema 2 and 4:30pm
Take the kids to both, I mean it. Although Sean Connery just might be too sexy for children in this film. I mean that too.

It Came From Outer Space, Dial M for Murder and Andy Warhol's Flesh for Frankenstein playing at Fox Theatre 4, 7 and 9:15pm
Ok, so you get a 50's B-movie, a Hitchcock thriller, and a Warhol art-house flick, all in one 3-D filled day!! I've only seen Dial M for Murder, and I love it, but the other two are definitely on the list. Fox Theatre is challenging Bloor for coolest cinema in Toronto.

SUN JULY 13

Bush League at Boat (158 Augusta)
Awesome! Awesome. First of all, the band gets points for the Anchorman reference. But, that aint it, I saw this band open for Holy Fuck at Mod Club last year and they almost stole the show. They set up their entire equipment (including rudimentary P.A.) on the floor and play some serious punk rock, while the front man runs around singing in your face. He'll pull you into the stage area and generally get up in your grill. Good times.

Amelie and City of Lost Children playing at Bloor Cinema 7 and 9:25pm
A double dose of surrealist french director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Amelie is a beautiful, heart warming film and also the most straight forward of the two. City of Lost Children is a odd film about a man trying to steal dreams from children. Very odd indeed.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon playing at Fox Theatre 4pm
One of Universal studio's classic monster movies. The Creature From the Black Lagoon is a lot of fun, and now you can see this 50's classic in 3-D!! You can see it again on Tuesday if you want. Thanks Fox Theatre! Also playing Jaws and Friday the 13th.

MON JUNE 14

Dial M for Murder and Andy Warhol's Flesh for Frankenstein playing at Fox Theatre 7 and 9:15
3-D!! Come one, you HAVE to see something in 3-D this week. Ok, class project, everyone has to see one of these films and report back here. I don't care how far east the Fox is, we're talkin' 3-D!

Eraserhead playing at Bloor Cinema 7pm
David Lynch's films have never been weirder. Creepy babies, bad hair cuts, bearded ladies, everything you could want in a Monday night movie. Blue Velvet plays afterwards.

TUES JUNE 15

Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive playing at Bloor Cinema 7 and 9:35
David Lynch week I guess. At the bloor you can see 4 of his best films in two days. Lost Highway is probably my favourite Lynch film, and I refuse to explain why. That's surrealism baby. Mulholland Drive was highly praised on it's release, but with the exception of a pretty hot Naomi Watt's masterbation and love scenes, this film did nothing for me... ah great, nothing perverted about that.

Rushmore playing at Harbourfront centre 9pm FREE!!
As well as having great concerts all summer, harbourfront screens some great films, and for free. Rushmore is Wes Anderson's best film to date. Jason Shwartzman and Bill Murray are hilarious. The film also features one of my all time favourite movie lines, right here.

WED JULY 16

Ikiru playing at Cinemateque Ontario (317 Dundas) 7pm
There are some really good films to see this week, but this is by far the best. Akira Kurosawa's quiet, poetic film about a man who, after finding out he has terminal cancer, searches for some meaning in his life. This is truly an amazing movie, and if it's playing at Cinemateque, I'm sure the print is stunning.

That's all folks. I hope you can catch some of the 3-D movies, and come see me play with Olenka at Mitzi's Sister. I'll try to get something up for you tomorrow.
