A sad bit of news, yesterday one of the cinematic greats died of cancer. Sydney Pollack was a director, producer and actor. His best films as a director included Tootsie (still one of the funniest movies of the 80's), last years doc "Sketches of Frank Gehry", political thriller "Three Days of the Condor", and "Out of Africa".

But for me it's a bigger lose to the acting world. He was one of the great character actors. He was never a fancy actor, but a comfort to see on screen, and was the only saving grace in more than a few films ("the Majestic" comes to mind). If you're looking for some good viewing this week, I'd like to suggest a few Pollack related titles: "Husbands and Wives", "Eyes Wide Shut", "Michael Clayton", "Death Becomes Her"," The Player", and of coarse "Tootsie".
